PARVATI PATIL
And I know that it really, it might not even come true
But in my mind I'm having a pretty good time with

you!

Parvati Patil

Basics

FULL NAME: Parvati Prema Patil
NICKNAMES: Parv, Vati, Twin
AGE: 21 Years Old
BIRTHDAY: June 24th 1980
From the HP Astrology This is a natural sign for Gryffindors, not least because the griffin is part lion. Gryffindors born under this sign are outgoing, friendly, affectionate, and likeable. They make friends easily and are crushed when their advances are rejected. Their romantic, chivalrous nature makes them perfect examples of all that is best in their House. However, they are also bossy, domineering, spendthrift, and overly dramatic (ever heard the phrase "drama queen?") They have sharp tempers and need to learn to direct their anger toward only needful causes. The natural creativity and flamboyance of Leo makes Gryffindors born under this sign good at most everything they attempt, provided they apply themselves to learning magic rather than using magic to hog the limelight.

BLOOD STATUS: Pureblood going back several generations.
HOUSE/YEAR: Gryffindor 1998.

Family/Relationships

MOTHER: Amrita Patil | 51, Indian born Pureblood, Socialite

FATHER: Pankaja Patil | 57, Ravenclaw Alumni Pureblood, Doctor.

SIBLINGS:
Padma Patil, (21) Ravenclaw alumni. Padma is the other half of her, her twin and though they have very different personalities, Parvati couldn’t imagine life without her twin. She adores her twin and would do anything to keep her safe.

Priyash Patil, (9) home-schooled. Priyash was a surprise to Pakaja and Amrita who had believed that their days of having children were far behind them but he was a sweet surprise.
Priyash is obsessed with quidditch and is a sweet boy and though there is a large age gap between them, Parvati has never been so grateful for it as during the battle. She couldn’t have born having him on the battlefield along with her sister.

EXTENDED FAMILY: None of note though she has scores of cousins and grand-parents, uncles and aunts back in India who she has visited during the Hogwarts holidays.
FRIENDS: Parvati makes friends easily and she has a wide circle of acquaintances and friends though her two closest friends are of course Padma and Lavender.
She finds it easy to strike up friendships and is often one of the loudest people in the room, especially when she is nervous. The first onto the dance floor, Parvati loves a good party though if she is your friend, you will have her unending loyalty. A Gryffindor to the core, she’s very defensive of perceived bullying and will stick up for a friend against all odds.
Parvati is an easy person to befriend; she’s loyal and easy to talk to, rarely runs out of topics of conversation though has some difficulty keeping juicy gossip and secrets entirely to herself.
SEXUALITY: Heterosexual
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: None
CHILDREN: None.

Living Arrangements

PREVIOUS LOCATION: The family home in St. Aspath, Wales. Pankaja’s family have lived there for three generations (and Amrita and Pankaja took up occupancy when they returned from New Delhi in 1986). Parvati and Padma still consider it ‘home’.
CURRENT LOCATION: London, England
CURRENT RESIDENCE: One bedroomed flat in Perivale, Ealing that she has had for over six months and is slowly getting used to living on her own.

Occupation/Income

PREVIOUS OCCUPATION(S): none.
CURRENT OCCUPATION: Apprentice at Madam Primpernelles Beauty Salon.
CLASS: Money/Upper Middle Class

Politics

LOYALTY/ALLIANCE: Dumbledores Army | The Light.
ROLE IN THE WAR:
Parvati helped those in the Room of Requirement throughout their time hiding from the Carrows and fought alongside her friends and other DA members in the final battle. For her own part, Parvati duelled with the DE Travers, disarming him and helping Dean take down Antonin Dolohov
It wasn’t without its casualties though - she still has the occasional nightmare where she is on the battlefield only this time, she is on the losing side and sees her sisters lifeless body beside her.

POLITICAL VIEWS:
Pro Order. Parvati is very much a believer in the under-dog and will go out of her way to stick out for someone she sees being picked upon.
She is aware of how fortunate she is to have been born a Pureblood, not that she attaches any great stead by the blood through her veins as opposed to a Muggleborn. Hermione Granger proved that but during the war the accidental fact she was Pureblood worked in her favour.

Parvati believes in fairness for everyone, sometimes she will launch into a spiel about how every witch or wizard should be considered just the same (complete with hair flicking and flirtatious glances under her lashes) but it is something she believes firmly in.

Appearance

APPEARANCE: Identical to her twin sister Padma, the Patil twins were considered by many to be amongst the prettiest girls in Hogwarts. Not much has changed since Hogwarts and she has grown to her full height of 5”5 with long straight, dark brown hair and slim features including a surprisingly long, thin nose and dark chocolate brown eyes.

For work, she normally ties her hair back in a practical plait though she much prefers wearing it down and loose against her shoulders. She is rather fanatical about her hair, spending the majority of her wages on conditioning treatments and having it cut every six weeks to the small of her back. Usually there is a pop of colour somewhere - on her nails, earrings or barrettes holding back her hair to make her stand out from the crowd. Parvati prefers light summer dresses, skirts or floaty tops in jewel colours but for work has conceded enough to wear some more demure clothes in what she would term dishwater dull colours. Heels are rarely off her feet and she has a closetful (and under the bed and spilling out into the hall) collection. When she does wear flats, its usually jewelled or bright coloured slippers.

Parvati is a visual talker; she uses her hands to gesture and conversations are usually accompanied by the rustle of bangles on her arms or her shaking her head emphatically to emphasise a point.

Personality

WAND: 11 inch Rowan wand with unicorn hair, inflexible. Parvati uses her right hand to cast
Rowan Wood: Rowan wood has always been much-favoured for wands, because it is reputed to be more protective than any other, and in my experience renders all manner of defensive charms especially strong and difficult to break. It is commonly stated that no Dark witch or wizard ever owned a rowan wand, and I cannot recall a single instance where one of my own rowan wands has gone on to do evil in the world. Rowan is most happily placed with the clear-headed and the pure-hearted, but this reputation for virtue ought not to fool anyone - these wands are the equal of any, often the better, and frequently out-perform others in duels.

Unicorn Hair: Unicorn hair generally produces the most consistent magic, and is least subject to fluctuations and blockages. Wands with unicorn cores are generally the most difficult to turn to the Dark Arts. They are the most faithful of all wands, and usually remain strongly attached to their first owner, irrespective of whether he or she was an accomplished witch or wizard.

Minor disadvantages of unicorn hair are that they do not make the most powerful wands (although the wand wood may compensate) and that they are prone to melancholy if seriously mishandled, meaning that the hair may ‘die’ and need replacing.

BOGGART: Dead mummies; specifically dead mummified loved ones. Death has always creeped her out - its s final and her boggart takes the form of being locked in a room with mummies coming towards her, the bandages slowly unravelling to reveal familiar eyes or smiles.
PATRONUS: Squirrel - an animal which is known for its resourcefulness, ability to detect danger and issue warnings, and who loves to discover new experiences.
LIKES: scented candles, foot baths, manicures, bargains, bright colours, crisp linen smell, vanilla beans, kulfi, being adored, muscled men, shirtless muscled men, flowers, singing around the house, pancakes, bananas, fruit salads (fruit of any kind), fizzy alcohol, dancing.
DISLIKES: cleaning, not being able to find matching earrings, ladders in her tights, ignorance, prejudice, celery, peanut butter, whisky, tattoos on men.
STRENGTHS: Parvati is determined, outgoing, energetic, friendly and quick to give advice. She’s a surprisingly strong duellist and to offer her friendship to people. Good with colours and fashions she has a good memory for fashions and is good at matching designs and traits with designers. Since beginning working at Madame Primpernelles, she’s become more adept at creating beauty potions by memorising the base blocks and bases for them.
WEAKNESSES: Parvati can come across as a bit judgemental, a terrible secret keeper and occasionally prone to bitchiness. One of her worst traits is her ability to get the giggles at very awkward moments (which can turn into hiccups as in the middle of her transfiguration exam). She’s at heart a dreamer and doesn’t have a terribly high opinion on her value outside of her appearance but she covers up her low self-esteem by being brighter, bolder, more vibrant in her actions.
DETAILED PERSONALITY: Parvati is the epitome of femininity: she can be a vain, girly and self-centred creature but that wouldn’t be entirely true. There is much more to her than at first glance, though Parvati doesn’t often care enough about being thought of like Padma to show the other side of her. She’s fallen into the stereotype of being the ‘pretty’ twin as opposed to Padmas ‘smarts’ and is perfectly content with fussing over her appearance, picking minuscule pieces of lint off her perfect robes and ensuring that nary a hair falls out of place.

She’s always been obsessed with how she looks; Padma was the twin who would have been happy curled up with a book or who could engage in heated debates with their father but Parvati took after their mother and fell in love with the bright jewel colours of the fabrics, saris and bindis that littered their mothers generous walk in closet at home. Growing up, orange was her favourite colour and she still loves the bright shade to this day. Parvati is slightly insecure about her looks - she can obsess over her faults and traits because she truly believes that her appearance is really all she has. Padma is the smart one, the witty twin whilst she focuses he energy on being the one who fusses over her appearance.
Parvati is almost self-conscious in her appearance, playing up the giggly, girlish traits when meeting people for the first time as though she is apologising for not being anything more than her looks.

However, there is more to her than her appearance. Like Padma she has an intelligent head on her shoulders, though unlike her twin her strengths lie in subjects where she has to use her initiative or imagination rather than learning by rote. Transfiguration, Defence and of course Divinity were where she shone; subjects such as History of Magic, Astronomy and Charms were her weaker subjects unless she actively sat down and made herself study harder. An aside, she might not have had much interest in Charms as a subject but she’s quick to master the beauty charms and clothing charms that take her interest. Though, unlike her twin, Parvati is easily distracted and though she hated it, her time spent in the room of requirement was probably excellent for her studies.

Parvati doesn’t deal well with rejection; she has a tendency to take insults to heart and though she’s quick to dismiss comments against herself, insults against her family or loved ones are the sort she mulls over and is capable of working herself into a grudge. And she has a strong sense of what is right and wrong: sticking up (and sticking her nose in) to conversations in the common room when she thinks someone is being taken advantage of because of their size or age. She has a temper which is slow to rise but burns hot when she sees someone hurt. Parvati spent so often biting her cheek in her sixth and seventh year that to this day there is a scar on the inside of her left cheek. ‘Vati trusts Padma with absolutely everything; Lavender is her best friend but her twin is her other half; the flip side of the coin and she’s always had the uncanny ability to know when something was bothering her. There is a ‘twin bond’ between them and whilst she considers Lavender her very best friend, what she has with Padma goes far deeper into her bones in a way she can’t entirely explain to those who don’t have a twin.

Gossiping and flirting are two of her strengths and she’s never afraid to use either to her advantage. If it means getting a better seat or served first in a bar then she won’t hesitate to give a flirtatious glance or look, tilting her shoulder just ‘so’ so that more of her skin is exposed. Parvati loves romance and loves to fall in love; she’s had her heart bruised so often by jumping into relationships or giving her heart too quickly though she’s never been in love. Not the way her parents are but she daydreams about it, wondering who it would be and what it would be like to be married and in love.

She can be terrible at keeping small indiscretions to herself though bigger secrets she can keep schtum about. During the War, she found herself becoming almost wary of her ability to hide behind a facade; she giggled, flirted and teased her way with ’suitable’ boys whilst fighting the rising bile at the marks and bruises on her friends bodies and faces. But more than her desire to stand up for what she believed in was her need to see Harry win and so she tried to turn what was happening into something positive, into something constructive.. She found herself almost playing the part of Pureblood princess to the hilt and hating the way she looked in the mirror. But she had a part to play; and if it meant sneaking food to those who needed it, then she would do whatever it took though she doesn’t consider herself brave. Not by a long shot but bravery and honesty are qualities she values above almost all else.

Since Hogwarts, she’s grown a lot and more than that, she’s matured. On the battlefield, seeing her friends fall and duelling with Death eaters proved to herself that she was capable of so much more than she realised and it revealed a drive and passion to succeed at what she wanted to do that she’s turned inwards and used in her work. Life is too short to sit around and wait for things to come to her; the deaths of her classmates brought that home.

History

CHILDHOOD:
Parvati Patil was born the youngest of the only set of twins to Amrita and Pankaja Patil. The couple had been married for nearly five years when Amrita fell pregnant and their world shifted when they found out they were expecting not just one but two baby girls.

Pankaja was a Hogwarts graduate who had turned twenty when he met Amrita Adani who was an Indian native (via New Delhi) when he fell in love with the pretty girl arguing with a clerk over the lack of proper spices in the very british corner shop in Birmingham. Pankaja pursued the witch with the sheer focus which had led to him becoming a well respected member of the Magical Maladies Ward at St. Mungos and after dating for a suitable time, he proposed.
They were married when he was twenty-seven years old.
By the time the twins came along, the couple had settled into Pureblood society of India (to be closer to Amritas family) and Parvati spent her afternoon in the warmth of the garden towards the bright coloured flowers of their garden in New Delhi. Parvati would be left alone whilst Padma went ‘exploring’. With the empty jam jars and containers spread around her, she continued in her quest to make perfume where the petals didn’t curl up and yellow after an afternoon in the hot sun; it was her quest, to make the sort of perfume that Mama wore and sitting amongst the upturned roots, discarded petals and jars which never quite fit, her chubby five year old hands would dab on the mixture in the same way as she’d seen on those evening when she got to watch her parents getting ready for a night out. Mama was beautiful; even at that young age; Parvati knew that’s what she wanted to be when she grew up. Why would she want to be a Doctor, Librarian or whatever Pads wanted to be that week when by simply being beautiful she could set the world on fire and make everyone love her?

Their sixth summer, everything changed. The manor which they’d called home was packed up until nothing remained but empty rooms where voices echoed. The night after the movers apparated their belongings away to set up in England, the Patils had eaten by the glow of a hundred candles. Sitting on the floor, she watched her father reach up to trace his thumb over their mother’s cheek; it was the same way he’d touch his library books in the hours he stole from work, from responsibilities where he could curl up and read a book and sip the light tea he favoured. Padma sometimes joined him but his other daughter would look up at him and simply shake her head before running into the garden with her skipping rope or hoop. The books in his library didn’t have pictures and books without pictures bored Parvati.

Her parents were in love; they completed one another and ‘Vati wondered what it must be like - to go through life always searching for that other half of yourself. She was one of the fortunate ones; her other half had been born minutes before her. And it had been that way throughout their childhood; Padma was the sensible one who would take her to have her wound tended rather than Parvati’s approach which was simply to sit where she’d fallen and howl loudly until someone came to see what the matter was and fix it. Kulfi and boiled sweets solved a lot of her childhood woes

After the move, Amritas upbringing in New Delhi let her transcend easily into the upper eschelons of the world of the English Society. Play dates with other pureblood children were common and from an early age the differences in the personalities of the twins was obvious. Padma, the elder by a few moments was more reserved and less likely to use her gap toothed smile to get an extra treat or two from the elfs or to ask to stay up for a few more moments to watch the men and women in their finery move around a ballroom or at a gathering.
Their lives were delightfully uneventful, showing magic on the same day (albeit in separate ways) and Parvatis favourite part of receiving her Hogwarts letter was being able to choose a new wardrobe for school..

HOGWARTS.
At Hogwarts, the twins shared a cabin but Parvatis attention was focused on the sheen of her shoes rather than the facts her twin occasionally spouted off. Padma was fixated on the classes but Parvati wanted the balls and friends that was such a part of the Hogwarts life she had heard of from her father.

Waiting for the hat to call out her name, Parvati took one step forward before realising that they were no longer PadmaandParvati and as her sister was sorted into Ravenclaw, Parvati realised that they wouldn’t be together. She wasn’t Ravenclaw material; her mind easily distracted and preoccupied. It turned out she was right and the hat had barely settled on her head before proclaiming her to be a Gryffindor. Sitting down beside a blonde, smiley girl who introduced herself as Lavender, Parvati tried not to feel the ache of missing her twin. It was the first time they’d been separated in eleven year but she began making friends and the first - and fastest - she ever made was Lavender with whom she had so much in common.

Every year it seemed something happened to Gryffindors: from Professor Quirrel and the rumours that abounded after the Trio went into the dungeons to the horror of the Chamber of Secrets which took three of the Gryffindors out of the common room and into the Infirmary. Each year her parents made rumblings about the rumours leaking out about the goings on at Hogwarts and each year the twins persuaded them to let them stay just a bit longer. Padma was in love with the library and Parvati had discovered divination and Professor Trelawney who, for a year, represented everything she wanted to be when she grew up. Just with a better fashion sense, of course. By fourth year, Parvati had settled into the rhythm of Hogwarts and the upsets which had become normal. The Tri-Wizard tournament brought excitement and for a little while, it seemed as though everything would go without a hitch. Parvati even received her first kiss that evening, from a boy from Beauxbatons and looking back, it was a magical evening with her very best robes and their dates. Not Harry and Ron- they had been nothing but disappointing as dates.

But the memories are tinged with sadness too and her first experience of death. Cedric Diggory had been the subject of a childish crush, a tall, good looking Hufflepuff who gave her buterflies in the way handsome boys always did. When he died, it was as though the sheen of Hogwarts dimmed with him. It was no longer the safe, secure place she’d always thought it was and she began focusing on her studies more, especially when it came to DADA and Dumbledore’s Army. It proved a wise decision.

From then on, everything took a turn downhill with the instalment of Umbridge and that horrible, horrible scene with poor Professor Trelawney and then finally, ultimately the death of Professor Dumblefore. It didn’t seem real until they were standing at the memorial facing a future without him. In her mind, he had become synonomous with Hogwarts and now he was gone.
And Voldemort was very, very real.

Parvatis blood kept her safe during the reign of the Carrows but with the loss of the muggleborn students and the change in atmosphere it wasn’t the school that she loved. It felt different, it didn’t feel happy any more. The twins parents wanted to pull them out after Dumbledore’s death but for the first time, Parvati lost her temper at her parents and demanded, begged and cajoled them into letting them stay. It was one of the few times she’s lost her temper properly but it was for something she believed in.

By the time the Battle arrived, Parvati had hardened slightly. She was no longer the entirely naive girl she’d been; watching her friends fight for survival and be tortured had rubbed it off of her. She did what she could to help; sneaking food and help in as much as she could until it became too dangerous and the twins took refuge in the Room of Requirement. Waiting, always waiting for the sign from Harry.

The battle was a mess; hexes, curses flying and the moment she thought her heart stopped when Harry ‘died’. During the fighting, Parvatis practice kicked in as she found herself duelling with DE’s much more experience than her and then helping Dean when she had taken down Travers. It wasn’t enough though; she had heard Lavenders scream (though she missed the blonde tumbling down to the ground) and her heart constricted; Padma was her twin sister but Lavender was her twin soul. When the dust settled, when the bodies began to be counted, Parvati made sure her sister was okay and then spent her time beside Lavender. Until she knew that her best friend would make it through, until the ache around her heart loosened slightly.

POST-HOGWARTS.
Parvati took a good, long hard look at herself after the battle and the world she’d accepted as her own. Talking with her twin, family and friends she decided that she wanted to remain in London and with the reality of what Azkaban, torture and the Battle had done to friends and strangers, Parvati knew she wanted to help. And to do that she needed her N.E.W.T’s. Returning to the school was hard given all that she had seen happen within the walls but she had to help, wanted to help and as well as sitting her N.E.W.T’s she also sat an O.W.L level Potions class before graduating a year later.

Parvati found work as a shop clerk (part-time) at Madam Primpernelles until the shrewd elder woman was sure of her intentions. For the past eight months she has been working as an apprentice to the beauticians salon, learning the traits and secrets behind brewing and bottling beauty potions. Parvati’s end goal is to learn how to hide blemishes and scar marks to give a little bit more confidence to those who suffered unnecessarily in the war.

She lives alone in London and dates but no long term relationships. On the door in her bathroom is a flyer for the potion. She sees it every morning and every evening but hasn’t quite decided if she wants to take it or not. Or more, if she’s prepared to live with the consequences of whomever her soulmate might be.

Misc.

COMMON KNOWLEDGE:
  • is the twin of Padma Patil and a former Gryffindor.
  • a firm believer in divinity, she has her tea leaves read before major decisions.
  • pureblood and fought at the battle of hogwarts. Kicked up a fuss when healers tried to usher her out of Lavenders room where she kept vigil.
  • has heightened emotions; develops crushes easily, laughs loudly and her heart breaks when she cries. (She cries a lot).
  • is the worst choice to trust with secrets and lives for gossip.
  • went back to Hogwarts for a seventh year to resit exams and studied for her OWL level Potions.

    SECRETS:
  • has had a crush on Neville Longbottom since her fourth year at Hogwarts. When she was twelve, she thought it would be perfect if she and Padma ended up with the Weasley twins but as she grew older, her attention was caught by another Gryffindor and her crush has deepened although only Padma and Lavender know the truth and they’ve both been sworn to secrecy
  • suffers from low self-esteem.
  • every few months has a nightmare about the battle only this time she is unable to help Dean or Lavender.
  • for all her bravado is sort of scared about being in love.

SOUL MATE ATTRIBUTES: I’d like someone unexpected for Parvati. She’s had a crush on Neville Longbottom for years but has never acted on it because she does genuinely care about him. Parvati has never truly been in love, despite what she claims week to week and she much prefers to chase after boys like herself. Or how she perceived herself to be - shallow, vain and just a little vapid when it comes to things that matter.
She’s dated the traditional ‘good looking’ boys at Hogwarts and did genuinely like them but theres always been something missing. I would love it if her soul-mate was someone that she wouldn’t traditionally give a second glance to.

PLOT IDEAS: I’d like Parvati to become more outspoken in her views and perhaps move further on in her career. She’s got one reason and one reason only; she wants to help. After Lavender awoke in the hospital, Parvati saw the scars which covered her best friend and knew there would be judgements about the way she looked. In a way, they were all scarred from the battle only Parvatis scars faded quickly to silver criss crosses on the small of her back but Lavenders never faded to that extent.
Parvati knows she’s got to help and her entire being is focused on creating a makeup range which will cover any scar. Its not much or earth changing but its something she can do to help.
